8/2/2021 Welcome Back stars!!Hello awesome friends!! I'm so happy we're all back together again!! I can't wait to meet my new friends as well as my returning friends in our "minute" meetings this week! here's the schedule:
11/17/2020 gratitude challenge! This week the students learned about gratitude and how to be grateful for the good things in their lives. They also learned how to be grateful for the lessons they've learned from things that aren't so good, like mistakes that have made them learn more or get better at something. I gave the students a 5-Day Gratitude Challenge and asked them to do one thing per day, for five days to really focus on people and things they are grateful for. All students who complete the Challenge and turn it in by Friday will receive a special treat from me! They can submit a picture to their teacher by email or bring it in.
Being grateful takes practice and needs to become a habit! We are happier and more productive when we practice gratitude. Give it a try! Write down one thing you are grateful in a journal or notebook for thirty days and see how much more you appreciate all of the blessings you have! 11/13/2020 Friendship soup This week the students learned about the qualities of a good friend. They even made up their own recipe and together we made "friendship soup". It was "soup"er fun!
10/19/2020 empathy superheroes This month the students are learning how to be "empathy superheroes". Empathy is understanding how someone else is feeling and trying to "put yourself in someone else's shoes." We also discussed emotions and how to recognize when someone is angry, sad, happy, etc. and how to respond appropriately. They also enjoyed watching the video below from Sesame Street about empathy. Then, they decorated their own empathy superheroes and wrote how they will be show empathy to others this year. 9/30/2020 showing CompassionIn our counseling lessons during September, we learned about compassion and how to show it to others. You show compassion when you see a need and you act on it to show that you care. Some examples we discussed were volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Must Ministries, or a local animal shelter. Other examples include giving food, clothing, or your time to those in need, encouraging someone, and helping people who are hurting or simply need someone to listen to them. We also talked about self-compassion, which is being kind to yourself when you make mistakes. They enjoyed the following video which help them better understand how to show compassion to others: https://vimeo.com/282518502. As you are aware, we will be welcoming students back for face to face learning at Nicholson on October 5th. To help keep everyone safe, all staff and students will be required to wear masks. Please have your child practice wearing them so it will be easier for them when they return to school. Here are some tips and a cute video to help your child.
